Whether you’re a lifelong Oklahoman or new to the Sooner State, you’ve no doubt noticed that it can be pretty warm here year-round. When our neighbors in Oklahoma City, Mustang, and Moore are looking for better ways to keep cool on the road, many choose to install high-quality tinted window films from OKC’s own Turbo Tint. Although this is a proven method to keep your vehicle’s interior cooler, protect your interior surfaces, and make the exterior look sharper, it’s important to understand Oklahoma’s regulations for automotive window tint. To help you drive with confidence, we’ve put together a summary of what you need to know about Oklahoma’s window tint laws.

How Legal Tint is Measured in Oklahoma

In order to determine whether or not your tint is legal in Oklahoma, the most important factor you need to understand is the tint’s visible light transmission level, or VLT. To put it simply, the lower the VLT number is, the more light it blocks and the darker it appears. Hypothetically, a window tint with 0% VLT would block 100% of light. You wouldn’t be able to see through it. Although a lower VLT helps protect your comfort and privacy, you need proper visibility to be safe on the road.

Windshields, Front Windows, and Rear Windows

It’s also key to understand exactly where you can install tint. Bright, sunny days are a constant here in OKC. While you may love cruising Norman and Moore in the sunshine, the glare may cause eye strain and make it tough to see. To keep you safe and reduce glare, Oklahoma’s tint regulations allow you to apply window tint to your vehicle’s front and rear windows. You may also install it on the upper portion of your vehicle’s windshield, which is referred to as the AS-1 line.

Car Tint for SUVs Versus Sedans

Different kinds of vehicles have different safety needs. In order to help you make smart decisions about your vehicle, Oklahoma’s tint regulations have two categories: SUVs and sedans.

SUV or Multipurpose Vehicle (MPV) Tint

If you are an SUV or multipurpose vehicle driver, the regulations for your vehicle are as follows. The front side windows, rear side windows, and back windows must have tint with a VLT [2] of 25% or lower. To cut down on glare coming through the windshield, SUVs are also allowed to have a tint strip applied to the top of the windshield down to the AS-1 line.

Sedan or Passenger Vehicle Tint

The regulations for sedans and passenger vehicles are a little less restrictive. Like SUVs, sedans can have a tint strip applied to the windshield up to the AS-1 line and must keep tint on the front side windows at a VLT of 25% or higher. The rear side and back windows, however, can be as dark as you like. There is no maximum VLT tint for the rear side and back windows in a sedan.
